Hazardous Area Classification
Identifying where explosive gas or dust atmospheres can occur, and defining the zones that govern equipment selection.
Identification of sources of release for flammable gases, vapours and combustible dusts
Zone definition for gas (Zones 0, 1, 2) and dust (Zones 20, 21, 22) atmospheres
Gas / dust group and temperature class (T-rating) determination
Hazardous areas exist wherever flammable gases, vapours or combustible dusts can mix with air. These are typical environments where classification, Ex equipment and periodic inspection apply.
Petrochemical & refining
Flammable gases and vapours from process plant, pumps, vents and sampling points.
GasZones 0–2
Fuel storage & handling
Tank farms, depots, loading bays and dispensing, where vapour can collect around equipment.
GasZones 1–2
Mining & minerals
Operations where methane or combustible dusts may be present, alongside conveyors and bulk handling.
GasDust
Grain, sugar & food
Silos, mills and conveyors handling fine organic powders that form explosive dust clouds.
DustZones 20–22
Chemical, pharma & coatings
Solvent handling, mixing, spray booths and powder processing.
GasDust
Wastewater & biogas
Digesters, gas holders and pump stations where methane is produced.
GasZones 1–2

Zones, equipment protection levels and temperature classes
The fundamentals behind every hazardous area decision we make. Select a zone to see how it is defined and which equipment protection levels are permitted.
Zone classification
Zone 0 gas
An explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously, for long periods or frequently.
Likelihood
Continuous / long periods
Permitted EPL
Ga
Zone 1 gas
An explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur periodically or occasionally in normal operation.
Likelihood
Likely in normal operation
Permitted EPL

Zone 2 gas
An explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it does, will persist for a short period only.
Likelihood
Not likely; short duration
Permitted EPL

Zone 20 dust
An explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust is present continuously, for long periods or frequently.
Likelihood
Continuous / long periods
Permitted EPL
Da
Zone 21 dust
A cloud of combustible dust is likely to occur occasionally in normal operation.
Likelihood

04 How we help
One partner across the hazardous area lifecycle
Safety in a hazardous location depends on every step being done correctly. Because we work across all of them, nothing is lost between classification, equipment, installation and inspection.
Classify
Identify where explosive atmospheres can occur and define the zones.
We are an electrical company specialising in electrical and hazardous area services and product supply, and we take pride in quality, professional service delivery for all of your electrical and Ex requirements.
Our work is led by a qualified M.I.E with more than 25 years of experience — experience that extends across the globe, with many completed projects for clients who are leaders in their industries.
